the auctioneer has a small part in the begining. he acts almost as a kind of itroductory narrator. he sells the monkey music box to the aged Raoul, and his pitching for the purchase of the Chandalier ("...the very chandalier which figures in the famous Disaster") is hwat leads the audience back in time, to the point when the opera was in its prime and the Phantom ruled with an iron fist.

The Auctioneer plays a small part in the Prologue of Andrew Lloyd Webber's 1986 musical. He auctions off old set pieces from the Opera Populaire, one being the Phantom's music box, which he sells to a seventy year old Raoul. Heaped on the stage under a curtain is the chandelier ("...the very chandelier which figures in the famous disaster...") off which the curtain is ripped off. There is an enormous flash, and the chandelier goes back to it's original place above the stalls, all the while going back to 1881.
